It comes from Tolkien. When Gandalf originally arrived in Middle Earth he turned up in a row boat at The Grey Havens. The curious locals who observed his arrival from the nearby pub consequently nicknamed him "Gandalf The Grey Import" and eventually just "Gandalf The Grey" or, although rarely to his face and only when he was in the right mood which wasn't that often, "Grey Gandy".
