last Saturday at about 5.30, the air started to fill with acrid smoke. Next door had had a new bathroom and bedroom fitted in the week, and we assumed that they were having a bonfire to get rid of the old bits.

we’d left the back door open, so we rushed downstairs to shut it, at which point the smoke quickly became *worse*. Imagine our horror to find that someone (almost certainly PoD*), had knocked a paperback book from the bookshelves onto the 300w halogen bulb in the uplighter [scream].

Pete rapidly removed the smouldering relic and dumped it outside, at which point we discovered that it was in fact a Jeffrey Archer “novel” (must have been left here by a visitor!). So PoD is clearly a cat of literary taste :)

Glad it wasn't more serious! Actual literature might have been destroyed - and even worse.
