a trip to Bath

we went to Bath yesterday, to see a company for a client (w00t! consultancy!). Now, it's only 17 miles to Bath from where we live (just SW of Bristol, in North Somerset), but it's 17 miles of hellish roads, and would probably take an hour to drive. And there wouldn't be anywhere to park when we got there.

so we decided to take the train. But you can't normally park at Bristol Temple Meads after 8 a.m. So - we got on a bus from the village, got out at the Hippodrome, and strolled through Bristol over to the station. It was a lovely day, and the walk through Queens Square and round St Mary Redcliffe was really enjoyable. The train fares were a remarkably reasonably £10 return for the pair of us, and we had time for a stroll round the city of Bath (and some shopping) on a beautiful spring day. Best way to do it.

[livejournal.com profile] perlmonger deviated from 20 odd years of clothes buying, and purchased a *baggy* linen shirt. I don't think I've ever seen him in such a thing, but it looked very good. It's to go with a casual linen jacket he also bought in Orvis, a shop we will be visiting again, I think.

and I didn't buy *anything* - I must be ill. Especially as there was a very nice brown leather bag in Orvis ... I may go back.

Ooh, yes. Orvis have some lovely (if pricey) stuff. Bloody good job I can't get into the clothes...

Talking of Orvis, what the hell is this thing?

"Traveler's Stripping Basket"

My first thought was - a basket that you climb into in order to change your clothes. Obviously not. Then I read the description several times and I know it has something to do with fishing, and possibly for storing the catch, but I'm still baffled.

Bath is one of those places I keep meaning to go to but never get there. Spring sounds like a good time, so I must start plotting now and present my husband with a fait accompli!
