of boots and stiles

if [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger should ask you if you'd like to go for a walk, think before you answer.

yesterday we donned walking boots, and packed waterproofs (no, of course it didn't rain), my nice new camera (which ran out of battery after two shots!), and some water, and set out for a leisurely stroll. Our plan was to do a loop across the fields, round Royston Vasey a nearby village , which would have taken about three hours.

of course, we should have realised what sort of afternoon it would be when the very first path on the map was blocked off, but we carried on. And on and on and on. We were out for six bloody hours, having to retrace our steps several times because of blocked off paths, etc., by which time my ancient knees were in some distress. A mile and a half from home, [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger strode off manfully and went to fetch the car, while I limped on in a pathetic manner. Still, despite all that, I did enjoy it enormously, and we shall do it again quite often. But as I said to [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger, lets do it on properly opened paths next time, eh?

...or a machete: there was only one marked path that was blocked by a locked gate (and we could have climbed that, I suppose); most of the problems were simple neglect, or a chest-high jungle of nettles, brambles and thistles as it's otherwise known. Lack of any clear signage slowed us down too - a fair bit of backtracking to find stiles and the like.
