winter draws on

the tumble dryer packed up ... ages ago. April or May, probably. We decided to be green, and manage without for the summer, and by and large it was ok. We occasionally had to dry things on a clothes horse, and once we had to leave the pure cotton bed linen on the line for four days until it stopped raining, but we coped.

however, the arrival of the shorter days, *more* rain, and yet another load of sodden linen made me Get A Little Man In. He arrived this morning, charged the outrageous sum of £46.20 to fit a new thermostat, and we loaded the duvet cover, etc, into the dryer and pressed the button.

needless to say, the sun is now shining, and there's a nice breeze ...

A whole procession of little men never figured out what was wrong with our washer-dryer, and to judge from the sounds it's making now, the washer is about to follow the dryer to the great scrapheap on tv. I wonder if it can wait until the January sales. We don't even have a laundrette locally any more ... the only one I know about is up in Cheriton, which is hardly convenient. I have enough space to hang clothes up to dry, I do not have enough time to wash by hand.
