from the Guardian comes this poignant article - Nina Bawden has a new book out, addressed to her husband Austen Kark, who died in the Potters Bar rail crash.

it's beautifully written, and may make you cry ...

Yes. I can tell that from the three paragraphs I read before closing the browser. This will be one to read at home, where I can be cuddled and soothed when I start to cry.

It's a wonderful piece of writing. I didn't cry (but only just).
It has made me realise how lucky I am, in some peculiar way, that Dave died when and how he did. I was there with him, as were his parents and his brother. There was no sudden, traumatic accident that caught us all unawares and wrenched him from us. We all knew the end had come and we knew that we had done all we could possibly do for him. I grieve for him still, but at least we had time to say goodbye.
Nina Bawden wouldn't want my pity - but she has my sympathy and sorrow for the sudden manner in which her world was changed forever. Sometimes I feel that I am slightly insulated now from some pain because the unthinkable has already happened.
Thank you for the link.
