Baby's First Kill

this morning, Lilith bounded through the window with a mouse in her jaws. She was *exceptionally* pleased with herself, and as is the tradition, we complimented her profusely before perlmonger bore the corpse away for ceremonial burial (well, interment in an empty Whiskas tin in the swing bin).

this does not bode well for what is left of the wildlife of North Somerset - she's not even six months old yet.

Does she have a box or basket that you can adorn with a silhouette of a mouse in the style of a fighter pilot?

It's far better than on of our cat's first kills - she brought home a slice of mouldy bread, but was equally proud!

Do you keep her in at night-time? It is increasingly recommended for responsible cat-owners -- small birds and critturs tend to be most vulnerable to feline predation in the dark, and when they're asleep. Really responsible cat-owners set up enclosed cat-runs for their pets, with catnip-stuffed felt or wind-up clockwork mice etc for them to hunt.

Sure, cats are natural hunters -- but it isn't nature that keeps so high a density of small feline hunters, in a landscape where nature is already under many other pressures.
