the Blue Nile are my absolute favourite band ever - only three albums in god knows how many years: A Walk Across the Rooftops (1983), Hats (1989), and Peace at Last in 1996. All of them jewels, little slices of perfection; on the four occasions I've seen them live (which is no mean feat, given that they only tour when an album is released and I only started listening to them in about 1994, thanks to
jonhoneyball and
spride), their stage sound is even better, an extraordinary aural tapestry that wraps around you.
since their last album was released in 1996 (I can't believe it is that long ago), rumours have abounded of record deals falling through, new ones being negotiated, and hordes of anxious Blue Nile fans have been waiting desperately for an album that we thought was recorded, and was just awaiting a decent deal.
and this afternoon I read this ... if it's to be believed, there's no new album, and there won't be. Paul Buchanan is ill, and doing very little.
I'm ... bereft.
