further to yesterday's unfortunate incident involving spectacles ...

I actually broke the arm, rather than the lens. And as they are almost four years old, it was probably just old age that did for them (I can sympathise ..). I did have Vision Express insurance when I got them, but they never reminded me about it, and it wasn't renewed.

[livejournal.com profile] perlmonger has very kindly mended them, in some Heath Robinson-esque manner involving a plastic drinking straw and some red sticky tape. So now I look like a pikey, but at least I can see again - the spex I was wearing were giving me eye strain.

Get him to use Sellotape or a sticking plaster and you could look like a computer-type person. Or a trainspotter.

I wanted him to use sticking plaster so I could pretend to be Jack Duckworth. But your idea has merit.

he's from Corrie Street. Don't pretend you didn't know, because we don't believe you.

Nope - never seen it. Or EastEnders. Strictly an Archers man, me.

If there's someplace near you selling cheap over-the-counter sunglasses or reading glasses, and you have a little time free, you can try taking your glasses in and comparing hinges. (Size and number of sticky-out thingies, chiefly.)

You may well find a pair of cheap glasses from which you can scavenge the temple pieces to repair your beloved spectacles. Even if they're not a perfect fit, they'll hold up better than tape for the interval between now and whenever you manage to get a new pair.

The first time I tried this, I found a match not only for the hinge but also for the color of the frames, and ended up wearing the amended glasses for another year.

If they still make the frame, you can probably buy a new arm for them. Or, you can buy a new one of the same frame and stick the old lenses in it.
