and after ID cards, they're going to try and track where we are, and how fast we went to get there ...
Under such a scheme, cars would probably be fitted with GPS tracking devices which measure their distances from satellites, pinpointing their position to within five or 10 metres.

Each vehicle would transmit its location back to a central computer, probably via the mobile phone network, which would then calculate the charges.

There has been talk of such schemes for years. Basically, the slower you're moving, the more time you're sitting in traffic jams, so the more congestion charges you have to pay. It's the old double-whappy - you pay taxes se we can build crap roads, then if you have the audacity to actually venture out into the traffic, you can pay again! Brilliant!

And of course, it's only a matter of time before someone notices that the same system could be adapted to spot if you break the speed limit, and automatically apply points too!
