gosh!  I have received an e-mail from www.cloverdalepaint.com thus:
*Photo use*

I am writing to ask your permission to use your Autumn photo, by the lake, image.

We would like to use this as a part of a composite image for a front cover of our retail flyer.

of course, they don't tell me *which* photo, but I think it might be this one.

anyway, I'm off to ask the good people in the photo conference on CIX how much I could ask for this.

I'm so excited!

...with stock photo library rates, rather than the cost of commissioning a pucka photographer to go and photograph that scene, and that those rates depend on the nature and scope of a use (I used to have a lot to do with this trade). Use of a single image on a retail flyer in one rights territory is very cheap, generally, because it doesn't preclude any other use of the same image, even in another Point of Sale brochure. Also, stock libraries will be quite happy to offer discounts on their usual rates to get a sale, meaning that you probably have to go in cheaper than they are prepared to go. Stock libraries WILL have a scene as striking as that one of yours on file, because they will have sifted through millions of transparencies (and digital images these days) from professional photographers and only kept the best or most saleable ones.

You might be better off doing something that the photo libraries cannot - parlaying the UK Single use Point of Sale rights for some sort of benefit in kind - like vouchers to the value for a load of free paint or something.

Oh, it's http://www.cloverdalepaint.com/ and you could parlay the rights for an opportunity to quote them to fix their website...

it's not the money

... it's the thought that one of my photographs is good enough to be used in someone else's advertising. And it will help justify the *enormous* amount of money I've spent on the Nikon D70 and [cough] assorted lenses over the past three months :)
