Feb. 16th, 2005 11:37 amI don't generally sleep well, and I could count on the fingers of one hand how many unbroken nights I've had in the past couple of years. And that figure is now updated by one; the recipe? Phil Beer, two whiskies, and a cold night.
last night, we went to the Folkhouse (*don't* look at the website!) to see Phil Beer, who is one half of Show of Hands.
we discovered Show of Hands at the Trowbridge Folk Festival last year, and were instantly entranced, then saw them play again at St Georges in Bristol last year. Last night was just Phil (who I discovered is, astonishingly, on CIX!).**
anyway, I digress. The Folkhouse is an odd place - lord knows how they survive. The gig cost the princely sum of £8 a head, and was in the downstairs hall; tables and chairs, nightlights on the tables, and you could take drinks in from the bar (which was cheap). But my word, it was cold in there ... Phil had a guest singer from Cornwall, Tom Palmer, a fine guitarist and singer.
I haven't been to a music gig like that for probably 25 years or more, when I used to visit the folk clubs in Edinburgh, seeing people like the JSD Band, Hamish Imlach, Paddy Bell, Billy Connelly (before he was famous). It was a really, really good evening - Mr Beer is a depressingly good instrumentalist, and an excellent raconteur. I had a couple of whiskies while the set was running, then came home to a cup of tea, cats, and a frosty night. And slept like a log - completely undisturbed - for 7.5 hours.
**and Steve Knightly (the other half of Show of Hands) is due to play Bristol next month, so we shall get tickets for that. And Phil Beer is playing a pub gig in Nailsea (our nearest tiny town) in March too.
so if I could just get Phil to come and give us a private concert every night, when we've moved to the arctic circle, that'd do just fine. You can post us the whiskey.
