a miracle

our microwave is pretty old - probably 12 or 13 years old. We hardly use it for cooking - we make porridge on winter mornings, and occasionally kick off baked potatoes.

but it's invaluable as a meat safe to thaw things in (Iggy does know how to open it, but it's now in a place where he can't actually manage it). And it has a splendid kitchen timer.

the other day, we discovered it was ill. All the buttons worked, except the Start button (no, it's not Windows :), so it was rendered useless. We poked and prodded it, and then accepted that it had done its duty, and decided we'd go out this weekend and buy a new one - we don't use it much, but I didn't want to be without one.

we had a brief power outage on Sunday evening - something to do with cats and kettles, don't ask - and it occurred to me last night to try the microbe again.

and lo! - it works. And timed the basmati to go with the dhal *perfectly*. Welcome back, old friend.

Curiously enough, that's what I use ours for. On the other hand, you win ... none of our cats can open the microwave.

We were going to replace thetoaster at one point because it had mysteriously broken and wouldn't pop up or push down. It turned out that the power was off!

Obviously, if a reboot sorted it, it does run Windows...

As well as a meatsafe, ours (ex-shj) also serves as a larder that neither Samson nor the cats can break into.

But it's not microwaving very well any more, so a new one is on the cards. If only we could find one we like half as well. I wonder if [livejournal.com profile] major_clanger has PX priviledges at Mildenhall?

For more unusual things to use your mircowave for, try heating up lemonade. If you get it right, it's hot but still bubbly.

That's pretty much all I ever used a microwave for.

The intermitttent wipe on my Golf died early spring (just in time to be really annoying in thin not-quite-raining-but-not-quite-stopped-either, dunno what its McKenna Number would be). Got in the car yesterday and unthinkingly used it - and it worked.

cars are odd. The heater in [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger's Xantia died a couple of years ago - as it was cold, he used another car to go to work, and left the Xantia standing through the winter.

come spring, charged the battery, pumped up the tyres, turned on the ignition, and yes - there was heat.
