#20174. This has come up in non-security debates for a project I work with, though (agreeing metadata standards for space data grids). The gist of the debate centered around whether we could agree that "Name", "Email" and "PhoneNumber" were allowed to be elements in a schema describing astronomical data sets. The NASA guys had no problems with this, and I don't think the various Asian grids did either. However, someone from one of the European grids pointed out that we couldn't keep this kind of data on people for longer than some specific amount of time (6 months? a year?) without violating European laws on personal data. As this metadata was automatically harvested from registry to registry around the globe, a person had little control over where their name and email ended up (or for how long).
The eventual decision was "Let's worry about this later," so Name and Email were kept until such time as any of the projects had the budget for legal advice. But I wonder how results from this petition might affect whether space grids were allowed to keep names and emails of people responsible for online star data?
