ramtops: (hat)
we popped up to John Lewis last night to buy a new tv (see LJ passim about the demise of our previous set). Having identifed the particular Panachronic model we wanted, we eventually managed to snag a passing salesdroid (who really didn't want to be snagged, I might say), who said that they didn't hold stock, and the earliest they could let us have a television would be Tuesday. Teusday? When West Wing was on at 9 p.m.? I think not.

so we hurtled through The Maul to Dioxins. No stock. So I asked them to check with other branches, as our local Currys (same group) had stock the previous day. No, nobody had stock, apparently - vair strange. It's now 7 p.m., and I'm starting to panic ...

five minute drive round to Comet, and were positively pounced upon by a young black lad with wonderful hair. And lo and behold, they had the very Panasonic we wanted, at a price less than JL, and including a VHS video, a DVD player and a Pace (exOn)Digital box. Now as it happened, we wanted an SVHS video, and they had a matching Panachronic for about UKP200. So after a bit of haggling (this is the short version), we came out with:

  • Panasonic 32" wide flat screen dolby all singing all dancing 3 scart tv

  • Panasonic SVHS video that apparently does all sorts of clever things, and will never be used because we have a Tivo, but Pete said we had to have it

  • Panasonic RV32 DVD player, which it seems we can get modded to play all our Region 1 DVDs for about £40

  • Pace digital box, which probably won't work here, but it's worth a try

  • and a 3 year warranty on the television

all for just under UKP1600, which we thought was a bit of a result. The resultant heap of boxen filled the back of the Moose (Landrover Disco) to capacity, and we finally got home at about 8.30.

of course, it took till after 1 a.m. to get the old rig out, and the new rig in, and the Tivo is a little constrained in terms of both colour and sound, but this could well be down to the state of the scart cable, which appears to have been used as some sort of teething toy for cats [grrr]. And thankfully, through our exhausted haze, we noticed the Tivo, bless its little heart, recording the late showing of West Wing, so we don't have to wait till Sunday. Which is nice.
