and, hypothetically, went for ten days, how long should we stay in the city, and how long should we devote to tootling round California in a convertible?
and what are the "must-sees"? Alcatraz, Golden Gate, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Fisherman's Wharf, cable cars ...
anyone know any inexpensive hotels in the city?

Date: 2003-05-18 05:44 am (UTC)Monterey is nearly 3 hours south. But, damn, it's worth the drive. Possibly best tied in with a trip down to Big Sur.
I've not been to Alcatraz. Fisherman's Wharf is best done as part of a day sightseeing via Muni and cable car. Golden Gate, yes, and then do the Marin Headlands at sunset, and finish the day with dinner in Sausalito at Scoma.
For wines, drive up to Glen Ellen in the Sonoma, and go to Imagery and Benziger Wineries. You won't regret their reds!
Yosemite is highly recommended. Stay at Mariposa outside the park. Allow a day to get there and a day to return, and a day or so for the park itself. Maybe two if the road over the mountains is open.
