and, hypothetically, went for ten days, how long should we stay in the city, and how long should we devote to tootling round California in a convertible?

and what are the "must-sees"? Alcatraz, Golden Gate, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Fisherman's Wharf, cable cars ...

anyone know any inexpensive hotels in the city?

I always think I want to be in the city and then when we get there I always want to drive out to places every day!
in the city: Coit Tower, the huge fireman's nozzle, at dusk; Ghiradelli square; Union Square, briefly; Chinatown; Golden Gate Park and Seal Point and the fabulous suburbs on the way to the VA hospital; Cafe Flor on Market and 15th and Noe - with a triangular garden area; the mini brewery we never get to; the gourmey chocolate tour; the diner off Valencia in SoMa that does chicken apple sausages
outside: the Wild Fox diner on the way to Marin/Sonoma for biscuits and gravy gourmet style

damn you! now I need to go back! yearn, yearn, yearn!
