This is a *great* piece - Tanya Gold on Susan Boyle from Britain's Got Talent, in the Guardian.

I didn't see the show, but I saw her on the news and heard her sing.

I wouldn't have said she was ugly myself. She's not beautiful, but she just looks like a normal middle-aged woman to me.

How hateful it all is.

I'm finding the whole thing so artificial (and yes, I know it is, but moreso or summat!) ...

The show had auditioned her - so knew that she was capable - and the show *chose* not to advise her on clothes / hair / etc (or, indeed, maybe there was a double-bluff and they actually had). Either way I'm left in doubt that she was appearing without any external input whatsoever. The whole affair reeks of 'making good (fsvo) tv' and is unfair to her.

Well, of course, it's like all "reality" TV, which is about as real as, oh, Katie Price, for instance.

As you say, worth remembering that all these people have been through auditions, including the stripper; she must have boosted the ratings a bit.
