is there something going on that I don't know about? Trundled off to Sainsburys yesterday at about 3 p.m., and it looked as though the Christmas Eve hordes had been in. No cream, no mushrooms, no fresh herbs of any kind, and [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger mnanaged to grab the last bag of organic spuds. The shelves were barren; I can only surmise that there was an unseasonal plague of locusts in Ashton Gate, Bristol.

so, having breakfasted magnificently on toast with Very Expensive Morello Cherry Preserve, I must away to a different supermarket, hopefully one with some bloody stock. Decisions, decisions - Tesco at Nailsea (small and not very good), Waitrose at Portishead (nice, but subject to erratic stock levels on Sundays), or Asda at Bedminster [shudder].

but I must go - we are almost out of white wine, and my veggie daughter is coming to stay, so the normal pots full of precooked stuff in the freezer will not do.

I must procrastinate no longer - farewell!

Ah, the Sainsbury's empty shelves virus is spreading. I'd always thought I was being singled out for some peculiar favour in Folkestone but apparently not.

I see you've also been visitated by a different plague.

It was the same in Tescos in dear old Melton Mowbray - lots of pikey families filling trollies with enough food and lager to feed and army.
I was as puzzled as you as were the staff who were on the last legs

Oh, wait, weren't there 'important' football and rugby matches yesterday, or something?

ah - this will have passed me by entirely, as I am not remotely interested in Sport.

I shall now have to ponder what all these couch potatoes have made with cream, coriander, mushrooms, parsley and pancetta ...

Something delicious to go with chicken, I hope. Actually, I really like the idea of gourmet couch potatoes.

Very Expensive Morello Cherry Preserve is all very well, but Eyewateringly Expensive Mulberry Jam is better.

FWIW Mac, I just had a Tesco Home Delivery and it was the poorest one I've ever received in some 3 years of 4-weekly deliveries. So much stuff was out of stock, it almost wasn't worth the delivery charge. :-(

It's what the illiterate call "Valentines". It's now celebrated as another holiday, complete with rampant consumption of food and alcohol, indiscriminate present-infliction and - round here anyway - fireworks.

fireworks? Good grief ...

Valentines has become another of those ghastly commercial things that [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger and I leave well alone.

Dunno.

Was out driving around South London earlier, and there wasn't any bugger around. It was even before the rugby started....

Maybe they've all been having nice valentine weekends away.

Don't do Asda dear, it is just... horrid. I went to one recently, and had to lie down with a couple of bottles of Krug afterwards, just to feel right again.
