went to see the incomparable Richard Thompson yesterday at the Warwick Arts Centre.

Jim Moray was the support act, and frankly the sound engineer did him no favours; he was badly mixed, and I couldn't make out his lyrics at all ... after his set, there was an interval, during which we rather expected to see the RT kit set up. But when we came back, there was ... a guitar. That's it - one guitar.

I've seen Richard Thompson play many times, and it's a l-o-n-g time since I've heard him do just an acoustic set, but my word, the man can still do it. He played a huge gamut of stuff - from and ancient and venerable Fairport track from the 60s, to some of his latest work. He opened the set with One Door Opens, then carried on for a couple of hours, taking in Gethsemane, I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight, Don't Sit On My Jimmy Shands, Beeswing, Cold Kisses, Crawl Back, to name just a few. Closed the set with From Galway to Graceland, a lovely song.

the audience were very strange - nobody seemed to be involved with the music, nobody applauded when he played his keynote songs, nobody joined in the chorus of Crawl Back. Very unlike any other RT gig I've been too. But it was *fab*, and well worth the 220 mile round trip.

Ooh, I'd have been tempted if I'd have realised - glad you enjoyed it :)

It's a shame Jim Moray wasn't well mixed - he's normally very good for the whole hearing-lyrics thing.

He's very very good really!

Sound man screws up support act's mix? Never heard of that before, ever.

Jealous, jealous, jealous! Good job it wasn't a gig within spitting distance of Leeds, as me pal Trish and I were just saying that we hadn't been to a RT gig in the age of a blind pig. Just missed John Martyn in Leeds, too, apparently - after my previous whinging there was a gig at the Irish Centre and neither of us knew. Bummocks!!

it's so bizarre when you get an audience like that, isn't it!
