lordy - it seems to me that driving standards are getting worse and worse ... I'm trundling along the M5 as ! write this, and wondering just what it is about the inside lane that offends British motorists.

instead of concentrating on speed, perhaps the Great British Plod might stop people for simple bad driving, beginning with incorrect lane discipline on motorways.

Ah, you were distracting the driver going "Look at all those idiots...." :)

The problem is that it is very hard to prosecute for "bad lane discipline", wheras speeding is simple to prosecute, typically without tying up an officer in court.

Pete could see the idiots for himself - he tends to watch the road (most of the time :) when he's driving.

of course it's simpler to prosecute for speeding. That doesn't mean that traffic police shouldn't be pulling people for poor driving, if only have a little roadside chat with them.

There's enough people speeeding to keep the traffic police busy enough. And let's be honest, many of the bad driving practices you see on the motorway are accompanied with speeding as the whizzwonks weave through the "slow" traffic.

[sigh]
speeding in and of itself is not bad driving. Inappropriate speed is bad driving.

and sitting in the middle lane of the motorway when there's nothing to overtake, effectively turning the motorway into a dual cabbageway, is bad driving.

I think you'll find that the law deems speeding bad driving, by definition.

And I didn't say speeding was bad driving, I said it often accompanied it.

BTW, how fast was this person sitting in the middle lane going?

a web-of-trust set of webcams on cars and a button on the dashbaord saying I've seen a pillock that generates images from all the webcams in a 10foot radius to prevent ganging up on the innocent...

Trying to fix a social problem with technology eh? Now, I'm sure there's a lot of books in your library which cover the consequences of that one. :)
