Pete and I have been discussing transport in the last week or so. I fancy getting a camper van type thing, and we are also considering bicycles.

the latter mode was discussed at length last night, and I pointed out that my knees may not be up to pedaling now.

and - with chilling timing - my right knee is more painful today that I can ever remember it being. Arse. And "sod it" to arthritis.

Arse indeed.
And yay for camper vans. As long as someone else is emptying out the toilet ;)

If you're not against herbal remedies you could try taking Devils Claw for your knee. Its a natural anti inflammatory. I've been taking it for a couple of months for my ankle having given up the prescription diclofenac (volterol) as it was upsetting my stomach too much.

yay indeed. As for emptying, that is - surely - what [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger and [livejournal.com profile] gmul are *for*!

I think so, I get mine from here http://www.healthspan.co.uk/ I only take 1 a day rather than the suggested 2 and it seems to make a difference.

Why not a tandem, then you can pretend to pedal take as much of the pedalling load as you feel up to. Seriously…

we did discuss it briefly, but it limits [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger to only going out with me; or an alternative passenger ^H^H co-pedaller, I guess. And v expensive, and not that easy (I would imagine) to sling on a carrier.

but it's a tempting thought in many ways - P in his plus fours, and a tweed cap, and me in the sprigged muslin ...

You can ride them one-up, a friend of mine used to come to work on one. I guess it's harder work, but then [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger's only a slip of a young thing, really, isn't he? I'm sure he'd be up to it.

I used to regularly ride the tandems (father and I doing that bonding thing - or rather racing) solo - great if mother sent you out shopping and you didn't want to pay for the bus!

They can be riden quite happily from the front or back (providing you've got a bit of string!)

I can't remember exactly what we discussed in terms of type of vehicle but the things towards the bottom of here are probably what you're after. http://www.southernmotorhomes.co.uk/stocklist.shtml (I got mine from these people and they seemed OK.)

I suspect you'll be after the elevating roof type of van, if you still want to get in car parks. Finding sensibly priced examples though may take a bit more effort since I think they're quite popular. I've never been in one to know how comfy or practical they are for camping.

Hope the knee gets better soon!

don't think so - want something I can sling on a bike carrier on the back of the car. And I don't fancy being that low.
