I'm not looking forward to the next few days ... [livejournal.com profile] perlmonger says he's going to try to give up coffee.

him giving up smoking was bad enough, but I think this is going to be worse.

It'll be fine.
As long as you can put up with the snooring and dropoff in productive work due to random sleepage :)

Stop him! Whatever it takes! No-body should give up coffee ... it is too dangerous!

I gave it up three years ago - it was giving me migraines. Pete has a couple of minor health issues, and wants to rule out espresso as a cause. Personally, I think he's being entirely sensible.

;-)

I got rid of my migraines by giving up milk (trial and error proof). Although I cut down on the coffee I'm now back to my 1-2 cups of coffee per day, each cup being laughably just over half of my '12-cup' stove espresso pot. At the end of the day though it is always a case of 'whatever works for you' of course ...

milk? nasssty stuff - haven't drunk it since I was three years old (really). Why do you think I gave up coffee? - trial and error, same as you. I've had to cut right back on red wine too, and I've pretty much given up whisk(e)y, which is the one that has caused me the most grief.

I can take the very occasional cup of cafetiere coffee, but espresso is out now :(

I'm giving up caffeine for Lent; not for religious reasons but I like the annual experiment in willpower. And I'm curious to see what effect, if any, it will have. I'm an intermittent coffee drinker but a prodigious drinker of tea (not quite in the Tony Benn category but I could give him a decent run for his money). Fortunately, I like herbal tea so a hot drink will not be a problem.

Me, too. I'm not really sure why I do this except ... Well, I have given up alcohol a number of times, but it's easy, and my birthday falls during Lent so it can be a drag. Giving up things like chocolate is also no big deal because I eat it so rarely.

However, this year I am also planning to take something up during Lent, to balance the negative with the positive. Haven't decided what as yet, but maybe something of a craft-like nature.

I gave up chocolate three times for Lent, three years in succession. The first time was very difficult. The second time was easier. The third time was so easy it hardly seemed worth doing... and the net effect has been I've eaten a lot less chocolate.

Maybe I should give up livejournal for Lent.

If you did, I'd certainly find that very character-building as I pined away for forty days without your view of the world.

Could be scary. He's not going cold turkey, is he? The headaches and mood swings can be pretty fierce.

indeed he is going cold turkey. He didn't do too badly yesterday - felt a bit spaced out, but took himself off to the gym which helped. We'll see how it goes.
